After being out of town for the weekend for a friend’s wedding, Miles and I drove the 6 hours home from Richmond, and we got back just in time for me to hit up a 5pm yoga class at Charleston Power Yoga. Thank God, because after sitting in the car for 12 hours there and back, my body needed to MOVE! There is just something about Charleston Power Yoga that is completely magical to me. It is my happy place. Every single time I go there, I walk out more in love with yoga than ever before. I LOVE Baron Baptiste style yoga, and Charleston Power Yoga is a studio dedicated to only that. It is amazing. The classes are always completely packed with the most positive energy and the room is filled with the sound of everyone’s breathing (just like it’s supposed to be). The best part might be that I am totally anonymous there. Every once in a while I will see one of my students, but for the most part no one knows me or that I teach yoga, and I don’t have to feel like I have to be good at yoga and bust out all my tricks (still working on the whole yoga ego thing). I can do what feels right for my body that day, in that moment. When I first started teaching yoga, I was dying to teach at CPY, and I am SO GLAD it didn’t work out. Now it can be my little getaway. Don’t get me wrong, I love Blue Turtle Yoga (where I teach) and the teachers there are completely amazing. Blue Turtle offers such a diverse offering of yoga like Jivamutki, Ashtanga, Yin, Power, Hot Yoga, etc. But for this Power Yoga girl, CPY is a special place. Their slogan is “where flow junkies come to sweat”…even that is cool. On Memorial Day, I went to a class taught by Jessica and she played all cheesy old school pop. I know that sounds weird, but it was ridiculously awesome. Yoga doesn’t always have to be so serious, and she just let us have fun with it, flowing to the Backstreet Boys and Brittney Spears greatest hits. People were dancing and laughing and HAVING FUN! The girls who teach there are just so uplifting and sweet, the kind of people who you instantly want to be friends with. I’ve been able to go to a few classes taught by Audra and she is the cutest, sweetest little thing, and then somehow she gets in there and before you know it, you are getting your ass kicked! The owners are both former Blue Turtle Yoga teachers and they are complete badasses and very involved in the Charleston fitness community. If you live in Charleston (or visit) and want to fall in love with Power Yoga, you’ve got to check it out.
To top off a great yoga class, I went to Whole Foods to pick up a healthy dinner for me and the hubs, and then turned on the TV to find out that there is an Adele special on. Perfection!
What’s your happy place?
