Well, they did it again. Remember the coolest event of the year last year, Lululemon’s Yoga on King, One Big Ass Yoga Mat (Come on, you couldn’t forget it if you tried, Miles’ dislocated nasty ass finger is burned into your brain.). Well, this year their big event was to have a bootcamp + yoga on the USS Yorktown, as in the huge air craft carrier at Patriots Point. It was called Sweat on Deck, and if that isn’t cool enough, two of the most influential people in my life/career were leading it. Amanda Roush (you’ve all heard about her a million times, she changed my life and is one of the best trainers in the country) and Ashley Bell, who you’ve also heard about. Ashley was a mentor in my yoga teacher training program and has been an amazing mentor and friend ever since. She is awesome. Anyway, how could this event get any better? Completely up my alley!! They both asked me to assist the event, and I couldn’t think of anything more fun or a better event to come out of my current retirement for! (I know you’re not supposed to end a sentence with a preposition, but my blog, my rules:))
The weather was amazing and my in-laws were in town and offered to babysit! So Miles and I got to BOTH go (very rare these days that we get to workout together with the exception of running with the girls). When I found out Miles was coming, I asked Ashley if I could take her class instead of assisting it. Sometimes, you just need to be a student.
So a few days before the event, Amanda told me that “assisting her” actually meant that she wanted me to be up on stage with her demonstrating her workout (in front of 400-500 people)! My first thought was sheer panic, “oh no! I’m still holding onto 10 lbs of baby weight!!” And then I realized that this event was a huge deal for the Charleston fitness community, and to be on stage demonstrating with my mentor is a huge, huge honor! Sometimes, you gotta just get over yourself and enjoy the moment! So essentially, I got to be one of Amanda’s fly girls! I was up there with my friend Lantie, and we were demonstrating each exercise. It was so fun, and so hard and I definitely had to modify some because a.) I’m not in the best shape of my life (although I’ve been working my ass off to get back) and b.) I have some restrictions on what I’m allowed to do as far as core exercises go (more on that super fun twin pregnancy story later). Amanda kept looking back at me throughout the event to try to gauge if the workout was hard enough, and I think I showed her pretty quickly that it was. I was getting my ass kicked!
Here’s the scene, pretty unbelievable, right?
Lululemon outdid themselves. Only they could get away with closing down King Street last year and hosting a bootcamp and yoga event on the Yorktown this year. It was one of the coolest events of all time! I’m so lucky to be a part of this amazing fitness community. Here are some pics!
